Our Practice
Stephen R. Chun, OD, FAAODr. Stephen Chun studied cellular and molecular biology at UC Berkeley and graduated from its School of Optometry in 1974 where he has taught as a Clinical Professor of Optometry since 1982. He is the Coordinator of UC Berkeley's Optometry Educational Exchange Programs with China, Korea and Asia-Pacific Rim countries. He serves on UC Berkeley's China Initiative Project Committee and the Global Health Initiative Sub-committee for the University of California System-wide. Dr. Chun has led clinical rotations for 51 UC optometry interns, conducted 5 optometric symposia, and pioneered optometry clincs at Beijing Medical University from 1996-2003. He is a visiting professor at both Peking University-Health Science Center and Dalian Medical University in northeastern China. Dr. Chun has led humanitarian outreach eye missions for UC Berkeley in South China in conjunction with Shantou University, Hong Kong University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Most recently, he is helping Korea develop its first graduate level optometry program at Ewha Womans University in Seoul and made several observations on health care while visiting S. India. Locally, Dr. Chun participates in several local volunteer community service organizations, including the YMCA, Kiwanis Club, Head Start Program, Berkeley Library Foundation, Alta Bates/Summit Sutter Foundation and is an active member of the Berkeley Breakfast Club. He also provides vision care as a staff optometrist at Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Chun was honored as Alumnus of the Year (1994) by the UC Berkeley Optometry Alumni Association, the California Optometrist of the Year (1993), and Kiwanian of the Year (1979). In December, 2004 he was presented the Clinical Practice Award by the Primary Care Section of the American Academy of Optometry for outstanding contributions in primary care optometry to the community and the world. His outside interests including storytelling, where he enjoys sharing Asian myths, stories, and legends through art and culture with young children and adults at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; he is also an architectural guide there where he leads educational tours on the historic preservation, adaptive reuse and magnificent transformation of the old main San Francisco Public Library (built in 1917) into the New Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (opened 3/20/2003)by the famous Milan architect Gae Aulenti. At other times, Dr. Chun volunteers at the new de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor. He enjoys competitive cycling, swimming, taking scenic walks, gardening, and traveling to distant places such as Mongolia,Tibet and India to learn about different people, cultures and traditions. He has been happily married for 33+ years to Prof. Doris Sze Chun, founding chair of the Asian Studies Department and teacher of Chinese language at the City College of San Francisco. |
Mark A. Fujikawa, ODAfter completing his undergraduate studies at UCLA, Dr. Fujikawa graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC Berkeley's Optometry school in 1973. He then finished a general optometry residency at the University of Waterloo in Canada. He started practicing in 1976 as a founding partner of the Berkeley Optometric Group. Dr. Fujikawa was a clinical instructor at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry for twenty years. In 1978, he was honored as the Young Optometrist of the Year by the Alameda County Optometry Society. Dr. Fujikawa has been active in the Berkeley Lions Club, serving as President, member of the Board of Directors and the Sight Conservation Committee Chair. For the past 14 years, Dr. Fujikawa has been a baseball coach for the Berkeley Bears Youth Organization. He is a past-president and current Board member for the Berkeley Japanese American Citizens League. In his spare time, Dr. Mark Fujikawa enjoys backcountry camping, gardening and watching the A’s and Giants play. Mark and his wife, Georgia, have two grown children |
Allison E. Cho, ODDr. Allison Cho completed both her Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor's degree in Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She received additional advanced training and ocular disease experience during a residency in Primary Eye Care at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. During her optometric education, Dr. Cho received the Alcon Excellence Award and was recognized with the Leadership and Community Service Academic Award for two consecutive years. She also had the opportunity to provide vision screenings to the underprivileged on a trip to Mexico with the Lions Club. Dr. Cho is a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society, Alameda-Contra Costa Counties Optometric Society, and the American Optometric Association. Her professional interests include primary eye care - including pediatric and geriatric exams, fitting contact lenses, and management of eye diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. In her spare time, Dr. Cho enjoys traveling with her husband. She also enjoys hiking, piano, and photography. |
